.NeuroRestore is a research and innovation center spanning EPFL, CHUV and UNIL that develops and applies bioengineering strategies involving neurosurgical interventions to restore neurological functions. We integrate implantable neurotechnologies and innovative treatments resulting from rigorous preclinical studies that have been conducted during the last 15 years in rodent and non-human primate models. These developments have led to breakthroughs for the treatment of paraplegia, tetraplegia, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and traumatic brain injuries.

Development of Closed-Loop Algorithms for Epidural Electrical Stimulation in SCI patients

The position

.NeuroRestore is offering an master thesis position to work on the development of neurorehabilitation therapies for patient with motor disabilities (spinal cord injury).

The candidate’s main duties include:

  • Contribute to the development of multimodal (EMG and video-based motion tracking) closed loop algorithms to optimize EES protocols to restore movements in persons affected by spinal cord injury.

  • Develop data analysis pipelines to understand the effect of stimulation parameters and environmental factors on the elicited movements.

  • Exploit online closed loop algorithms for real time control of stimulation.

The candidate will have :

  • Enrolled in an engineering or computer sciences master program from an accredited institution

  • Strong computational and data analysis skills

  • Good knowledge of state-of-the-art machine learning techniques

  • Preferably experience with Git, for collaborative development and code management

  • Strong aptitude for teamwork and problem-solving

  • Outstanding adaptability and rapid learning capabilities

  • Demonstrated independence and proactive approach in tasks

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Fluent in English

The qualified candidate will benefit from joining a dynamic and multidisciplinary group working at the interface of neurorehabilitation science, regulatory, medical science, engineering and prosthetics. They will collaborate with EPFL academic labs, CHUV clinicians and vibrant medical high-tech companies. The candidate will have the opportunity to work at the interface between academia, industry, and the clinic with collaborators from different backgrounds and cultures, including worldwide scientific experts in rehabilitation and neurotechnology.

Location

The candidate will work at our .NeuroRestore offices at CHUV campus, Lausanne.
